The Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Company was in the farm equipment business from 1914 to 1985. The company was a major producer of tractors and farm equipment, creating many innovations in farming equipment. At its peak it was one of the largest manufacturers of any kind in North America.

Although the Allis Chalmers company produced a wide variety of farm implements, including tillers and harvesters, they gained recognition with their farm tractors. These tractors were painted a conspicuous orange, giving the company an easily recognized icon. The company produced a long series of farm tractors during the entire life of the company.

The most popular model of tractor for the Allis Chalmers company was the Model U, first produced in 1929. This was the first tractor to use low pressure rubber tires. Over 20,000 were produced. In 1959 the company built a hydrogen fuel cell tractor, making them a pioneer in fuel cell technology.

The Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Company was acquired by K-H-Deutz AG of Germany in 1985. This company was in turn purchased by AGCO in 1990. AGCO still holds the intellectual property of Allis Chalmers Co. The tractors are still valued by many enthusiasts, and replacement parts are still made available to Allis Chalmers tractor owners.
